San Francisco medical authorities say it was 78-year-old Cheng Jin Lai who was struck and killed by a Muni bus as he pedaled through the city's SOMA neighborhood on Friday.

The incident happened at about 8:40 a.m. as Lai rode along Bryant and 11th streets. A 27-Bryant bus made a turn onto 11th Street, and hit the victim, according to police. Lai, who was a San Francisco resident, died at the scene.

The Muni driver is a 10-year veteran of the department and has since been place on non-driving status. An alcohol and drug test was conducted per standard protocol, said Paul Rose, spokesman for Muni.

The transit agency is currently investigating the incident to determine exactly what happened. In the meanwhile, be careful out there.
