Starting very soon, you'll notice more cops and less crime (hopefully) while riding Muni.

As we understand it, the SFMTA is deploying more police on buses as part of a larger campaign to reduce the amount of violence and theft happening on the city buses. The extra security will go nicely with Muni's new "Eyes Up, Phones Down" campaign, which is exactly what it sounds like -- get off your damn phone and be aware.

The additional cops are coming on board the same time the District Attorney's Office says its partnering up with Mayor Ed Lee to launch some new initiatives that'll improve security on Muni.

We'll find out more about these initiatives at a press conference later this morning where Muni and friends (Police Chief Greg Suhr, Mayor Ed Lee) will detail your new and improved Muni ride.

The new effort comes a month after 20-year-old Justin Valdez, a San Francisco State student, was fatally shot in the back of the head while exiting Muni in the city's Ingleside District. Police arrested 31-year-old Nikhom Thephakaysone on suspicion of murdering Valdez; prosecutors claim Thephakaysone, who picked Valdez at random, was on a mission to kill.

"This is a wanton killing. There was absolutely no reason for this killing other than pure violence," District Attorney George Gascón said after Thephakaysone appeared in court last month. "This is a cold and calculated murder. This individual went out hunting that night and unfortunately Mr. Valdez was at the wrong place at the wrong time."
