Karl Fleischman, the father of the Oakland teen who was set on fire after dozing off on a city bus, has spoken.

The older Fleischman penned a very heartfelt letter to the Sequoia Elementary School community where he is a kindergarten teacher, thanking everyone for the money they raised and for rallying behind his badly wounded son who identifies as agender, meaning Sasha does not identify as male or female.

More importantly, he asked that parents take the time to talk to their kids about what happened that tragic evening of Nov. 5 -- and the consequences of it.

Sasha fell asleep while riding home on the 57-line in Oakland when the 18-year-old's skirt was lit on fire. The blaze spread to Sasha's legs, leaving second and third-degree burns. Police later arrested Richard Thomas, an Oakland High School student, on suspicion of assault; police said the bus surveillance footage led them to Thomas who then confessed that he lit Sasha on fire because the teen appeared to be male, but was wearing a skirt.

Thomas has since been charged with a hate crime.

Sasha, a senior at Maybeck High School in Berkeley, has received multiple skin grafting surgeries and is expected to recover within time, according to Karl Fleischman.
