Not every horrible news story has to end that way. Take this tale about Gem, the oh-so-cute apricot poodle that was found in a heap of garbage in the city's dumpster last month.

Not only has she gotten a total makeover (bath, haircut, etc), but she's found a loving home, too.

The Animal Care & Control delivered the great news this morning, saying the three-month-old pup will be going to her new permanent home tomorrow at 1 p.m. Who is the lucky owner of Gem? None other than a Recology employee.

It was two Recology workers who found Gem on a conveyer belt with just seconds to spare at the city's recycling center right before Christmas. The workers quickly grabbed the dog, who was already suffering from some serious injuries, including bite marks to her ears and neck.

The dog was taken into foster care -- and the Recology workers were thanked profusely by the city.

The good news kept getting better when more than 200 people from all over the nation flooded the shelter will bids to adopt the scrappy poodle.

"San Francisco Animal Care & Control employees were touched by the outpouring of concern and good wishes for the plucky puppy, and worked hard to find the best possible home for her," said Deb Campbell, spokeswoman for the ACC. "A Recology staff member -- with support from Gem's rescuers - won the lottery to adopt, and will visit Animal Care & Control at 1 p.m. Thursday to take her home."

See? The news isn't always so bad.
