Larry Brinkin, the once beloved Human Rights commissioner who was busted with child pornography, was handed his sentence this morning, which includes six months in County Jail and home detention.
In January, Brinkin, who was arrested in 2012 after police discovered child pornography on his computer, cut a deal with prosecutors, offering up a guilty plea in exchange for a lighter sentence. Prosecutors ended dropped the second charge of distributing child porn as part of the plea deal.
That lighter sentence was issued today and included the following:
SF Weekly broke the news in June 2012 when local cops had arrested the high-profile gay rights activist after investigators traced images of children as young as perhaps a year old being sodomized by and performing oral sex on adult men to Brinkin's IP address. SFPD acted after receiving a tip from the Los Angeles Police Department, which obtained from AOL an e-mail exchange between a Los Angeles user and zack3737@aol.com.
Zack3737@aol.com -- whom the police say is Brinkin -- provided graphic commentary on the photos of interracial adult-child sex. Comments included "I loved especially the nigger 2 year old getting nailed. Hope you'll continue so I can see what the little blond bitch is going to get. White Power! White Supremacy! White Dick Rules!"
Police say they linked the AOL address to Brinkin's IP address; he is owner of the account and paid for AOL service with his credit card.
Brinkin led the fight for the city to recognize same-sex partnerships. In, addition, he served on the Human Rights Commission until 2010 when he retired after 22 years of service. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution that same year proclaiming the first week of February "Larry Brinkin Week."
Back in January, Brinkin's attorney Randall Knox chalked the incident up to being a mistake and assured reporters that Brinkin "has a much greater understanding of the damage child pornography creates.
