When half a dozen current and former San Francisco police officers were indicted on federal charges including running a dope ring out of Mission Station, that was surprising.

But news reports that the POA is sweetening the pot for those who'd contribute to the indicted cops' legal defense fund by raffling off prizes of the sort one would expect to be doled out by Monty Hall -- well, that's also a bit surprising.

Our calls for POA President Marty Halloran have not yet been returned. So our queries about the suitability of a May 22 raffle for the officers -- in which a lucky winner who plunks down $20 for a ticket could walk off with an iPad, 60-inch TV, or perhaps even a trip to Ireland -- have not yet been answered.

An apparently less-swanky fund-raising affair will be held tomorrow night in SoMa. There's a no-host bar -- but, alas, no potential trips to the Emerald Isle.

More when we know more.

The San Francisco Street Food Festival was another success this year. Dozens of vendors with original, unheard-of creations, such as deep fried mac and cheese on a stick, black pea paste pancakes, and Korean quesadillas. Then there was the comfort foods we've grown accustomed to, like creme bruleé, shrimp rolls, and pound cake. Photographs by Mabel Jimenez.
