Bike Thief Makes Local Cop Proud After Stealing Bait Bike

Posted By on Wed, Apr 30, 2014 at 3:57 PM

This might be one of the few times San Francisco police have gotten giddy about a bike theft. And for good reason. Unbeknownst to the crook, he or she made off with an SFPD's bait bike, which is equip with GPS, allowing the cops to quickly retrieve the bike and nab the thief. Needless to say, it certainly cuts down on the amount of police work involved. See Also: Cops Bust Thieves With Bait Bikes

Over the last few months, police have lured a handful of thieves right into jail after busting them pedaling off with their bait bike. Above, is an image of the program's latest success which was posted to the SFPD's anti-bike theft Twitter account this morning.

We called Officer Matt Friedman, the cop in charge of catching bike thieves, to get more details on this latest bust, which is one of the first bait bike thefts we've seen documented on social media. No word back yet -- presumably he's arresting a bike thief as we type.

In the meantime, you can help keep crooks on their toes by getting your bait bike stickers at Park Station today and sticking them to your bikes. They'll be available in the next few weeks at other police station as well as bike shops.
