A 27-year-old man accused of murder last week has been released from jail after prosecutors decided there wasn't enough evidence to file charges at this point.

Last week, Rodney Williams was taken into custody on suspicion of gunning down 23-year-old Derrick Whitfield at a public housing complex in Potrero Hill. But this morning, the DA liberated Williams, saying "his case has been discharged pending further investigation," according to Alex Bastian, spokesman for the DA's Office.

On May 20, Whitfield, a popular graduate of Mission High School, was found on the unit block of Turner Terrace with multiple gunshot wounds to his head and chest. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital where he died shortly after.

A few days later, police arrested Williams on suspicion of homicide and a probation violation out of San Mateo County. Police declined to elaborate on what led them to believe Williams was the killer.
