Muni's Monday Malaise has stretched into Tuesday.

Drivers, sickened by a contract they voted down in a Putin-like 24:1 ratio, have taken their queasiness one step further and called in sick to work, en masse. The result: Two days of nightmarish commuting of the sort usually reserved for those busing into downtown Hell from the First Circle (or the 'burbs of Purgatory).

So, how many sick calls does it take to pull off a sickout -- and cripple a major city's mass-transit system? Glad you asked. Below is a chart revealing the driver sick calls, in total and by Muni division, for the  five Mondays leading up to June 2. Keep in mind that May 26 was Memorial Day and Muni ran an abridged, Sunday schedule:

Now take a gander below at the Monday, June 2 sick-a-thon:

So, there you have it: A "sickout" requires three to seven times as many drivers to call in sick as on a normal, garden-variety Monday. Perusing the divisions, it seems the Monday Malaise was particularly acute among cable car operators and Presidio-based drivers. Alert the folks in toxicology.

Per Muni, some 200 drivers called in sick for this morning's shift alone; SF Weekly has been told this will be a three-day sickout.

Here's to our civic health being restored -- equitably and rapidly.
