    Living with Endangered Languages in the Information Age

    In Afghanistan, only 100 or so people speak the Tirahi language, which is "critically endangered," according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. In the U.S., only about 200 speak Mesquakie-Sauk, a Native American language. By the end of the 21st century, half the world's 6,000 languages may disappear with the advent of globalization — a fact that's prompted an exhibit at Root Division, "Living with Endangered Languages in the Information Age." Thirty artists — including sound artist Daniel Konhauser and multidisciplinary artist Pantea Karimi — address the phenomenon in the exhibit, curated by Hanna Regev. A free performance and panel discussion, "Explorations into the Rise and Fall of Sign and Artificial Languages," includes choreographer Gregory P. Dawson and media artist Kadet Kuhne, as well as panelists Penny Nii, a book artist and Stanford University research scientist; Eric Theise, an app developer and experimental filmmaker; and Weidong Yang, founder and director of the Kinetech Arts collective.     The Soft White Sixties

    These S.F. blues-rockers have been a staple of the indie scene for the last half-decade, but last year's Get Right propelled them out of SXSW-darling status and onto another level altogether. Between middle-of-the-lineup slots at the Fillmore and a much-heralded set at BottleRock, you could do a lot worse on a Wednesday night than to catch them for one of these intimate shows at Brick and Mortar Music Hall, every Wednesday in January.     Humpday Happy Hour Workshop

    Not everyone is comfortable talking about sex. In fact, just hearing the word in public is enough to make some people uneasy, even here in liberal San Francisco. For those of you looking to explore your sexuality in the new year (or are just curious what the fuss is all about), head on over to Good Vibrations for its recurring (and often free) workshops. There’s something for everyone, from the timid and curious to the wild and experimental. Events Manager Camilla Lombard notes, “Our free event series is the perfect opportunity to drop in and explore a wide variety of topics you may be vaguely curious about or want to explore more deeply. You are welcome to show up and just listen, but it’s also a great opportunity to ask questions in a non-judgmental, sex-positive environment from our sex educator sales associates, who have more sex-ed training than most medical students. Humpday Happy Hour workshops vary in topic, but always aim to teach you the ins and outs of the ol' in-and-out.
