With neighborhood institutions like the 21 Club closing to make way for yuppie cocktail bars, Brown Jug remains an oasis — and one that takes full advantage of the state's operating hours window, 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. daily. This watering hole is not for the faint of heart, or for anyone who takes fresh sage in their drinks. And don't call it a dive just because they have Busch beer by the can. It's oh so much more. What you'll find at Brown Jug is alcohol, and lots of it; eccentric locals who might ask you to spin up a blunt for them if you have such skills; afternoon drunks who curiously know way too much about city politics; courteous if unamused bartenders who might just let you smoke inside — but you didn't hear that from us — and a couple TVs playing Giants baseball whenever it's on. And since it doesn't inspire the crowds of some of its upscale neighbors, there's always a seat for a big game. (It's an even year, right?)
