Elf You!

The holidays are busy and stressful times, and we often take for granted the real people responsible for making the holidays happen: those in the service or retail industry. We brush past their feeble attempts to sample us expensive perfumes in the mall, snatch lattes ungratefully out of their hands, and screech at them for not curling the ribbons on our giftwrap tight enough. Not once since we have graduated to less demeaning employment have we thought about what it's like to work thankless jobs during the holiday season. But David Sinaiko is forcing us to think about it, and the results are damn funny. Sinaiko returns as everyone's favorite department store employee in The Santaland Diaries, based on David Sedaris' classic Christmas essay and adapted to the stage by Joe Mantello. The show has been nominated for a SF/Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Award for Best Solo Performance, and each year Sinaiko does not disappoint, delivering an unforgettably hilarious and sardonic performance, poking fun at all of the excitement, craziness and, consumerism of the holiday season as seen from the other side: through the eyes of a Macy's elf!
