Immigration: The Untold Story

Immigration reform might be the talk of Washington at the moment, but there is one voice that is still left out of the debate too often: that of the immigrants themselves. Harvest of Empire: The Untold Story of Latinos in America makes no such mistake. Based on the book of the same title by Democracy Now! co-host Juan Gonzalez, Harvest examines the United States' long history of intervention in Latin America, and how it led to the immigration boom we know today. The results are not always pretty. The film details expansionist wars and decades of support for dictatorial regimes that were friendly to U.S. business interests. But it also shows the deep patriotism of U.S. Latino communities with scenes of immigration activists proudly waving American flags, and proves that conservatives weren't always defined by the shrill posturing of Fox News. “I believe in the idea of amnesty, for those who have put down roots, even though they may have entered illegally,” Ronald Reagan says in the film. Proceeds will benefit the Freedom Socialist newspaper, and a Southwest-style chili supper is served an hour before the screening.
