Nina Draws the Truth

Nina Paley is a phoenix. From the flaming wreckage of a truly hellish breakup, the cartoon artist rose resplendent by creating the animated epic Sita Sings the Blues, an astonishingly original film that weaves Paley's own life into selected events from the Hindu religious text, the Ramayana. The result is irreverent genius, exploding with color and employing the delicately warbled songs of Annette Hanshaw in order to destroy your heart and draw you a new one — it's also a special piece of legal innovation, since Paley refuses to copyright it. Tonight, the filmmaker hosts a screening benefiting the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Cartoon Art Museum. She includes several short films in her Minute Memes, series, one of which she made especially for the EFF.
