Stay Gold

Pure liberation in the arts lies in the affirmation that it doesn't take much to give a wild Pollock of a play a sudden esoteric urgency. Why should we go see go see a one-act musical about a salmon in a casino? It's a metaphor. CounterPULSE prides itself on catalyzing art and action through innovative performance pieces like The Gold Fish. Follow a salmon as she gambles her eggs for river passage (through a fantastical land that's supposed to be an alternative-universe California) at the Gold Fish Casino. Water activists and artists, the Water Underground, present us with an array of complex characters — the nymph dealing with water war-induced PTSD, the Army Chorus of Engineers, and an array of displaced River Creatures — in a tale that begs for social justice and activism through campy humor and show tunes. Catch it on stage while you can — the zany allegory and its gold-drenched visuals are currently being adapted into a film.
