You saw her in the blockbuster smash hit video for “Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It),” you saw her dancing with Beyoncé in the 2013 Super Bowl halftime show, and you saw her on Beyoncé’s Formation Tour in 2016. Now you have an irreplaceable chance to get an in-person lesson from Ashley Everett — Queen Bey’s longtime backup dancer, who was promoted to captain of Beyoncé’s dance squad in 2009 — when Bay Area dance school Pop Star Booty Camp brings her to San Francisco to teach a “Single Ladies” master class and a “Formation” dance class, both on Sunday, Oct. 15.
“Having access to Beyoncé’s dance captain is a rare thing,” Pop Star Booty Camp founder Carol Johnstone tells SF Weekly. “Because Beyoncé recently had twins, this has allowed Ashley to be available to teach. She’ll be teaching the Super Bowl choreography to ‘Formation’ for one of the classes — something you simply can’t learn anywhere else because it was only danced one time. In addition, Ashley is teaching the exact choreography from the Grammy Award-winning ‘Single Ladies’ music video.”
These are both separate classes, with the “Single Ladies” class at noon and the “Formation” class at 1:30 p.m. The classes are $70 apiece, with registration being handled on Venmo and registrants asked to include their email address and which class they’re interested in when signing up.
“All levels of dancer are welcome,” Johnstone says. “We’ll also have a question-and-answer period after the class and an opportunity to take a one-on-one selfie with Ashley.”
Pop Star Booty Camp offers a number of contemporary pop music-inspired dance classes. “I am also offering a Lady Gaga ‘Bad Romance’ dance class that starts on Monday, Oct. 16 and lasts for seven weeks,” Johnstone adds. “It’s $125, and we are all dress up like Lady Gaga and do a huge flash mob along the Embarcadero in San Francisco.”
While Ashley Everett appears in the “Single Ladies” video, she is not herself a single lady. Her fiancé, John Silver, put a ring on it last September during the St. Louis show on the Formation tour, as seen in the video above. The two have their wedding day scheduled for September 2018.
