As June begins next week, we can be reasonably certain about two things: fog and drag. Pride month’s crescendoing party has to start somewhere, and David Carver-Ford’s fashion show, Wig Parade, hosted by Nicole Monsoon, is a fine kick-off.
[jump] This free fiesta on Wednesday, June 3, happens to be Carver-Ford’s debut. A lifetime of repressing the urge to be a fabulous glamazon — and a husband who doesn’t much approve of drag for some reason — can only bottle up the desire for so long. (As Oscar Wilde said, “The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it.”) But more than that, it’s also a benefit for Wigs for Kids. Phyllis Diller sketches and remarks about fabulousness notwithstanding, this is a worthy cause on behalf of children who have lost their hair and their self-esteem to radiation therapy, burns, trichotillomania or other medical causes.
Her Majesty Queen Dilly Dally, the Reigning Monarch of the Land of Make Believe will be there, and costumes are coming from Retro Fit, which is like the House of LaBeija wearing Dior. Culminating with a raffle of Peaches Christ and Ab Fab tickets — Nicole Monsoon, Edina Monsoon, get it? — along with lots of 60-minute massages and acupuncture prizes, Wig Parade is bound to do for Pride month what the Magi did for the Christmas season when they visited the Baby Jesus outside of a over-capacity discotheque in an Bethlehem’s warehouse district: Start it off right!
Wig Parade, Wednesday, June 3, 7:30 p.m., at Oasis, 298 11th St.
