I braved weather as inclement as any we ever have in these parts last Friday in order to attend the recent members preview for Balenciaga and Spain, the retrospective of Cristobal Balencia's body of work currently exhibiting at the de Young museum. I was definitely the only person there under Forty-Eleven, and while I may have felt a little out of place in my hunter rain boots among throngs of polished sensibly heeled shoes, it was lovely to experience the exhibit with people who were contemporaries of the great designer. While gazing at a vivid pink evening gown with a cinched waist and voluminous skirt once worn by Ava Gardener, I overheard a distinguished lady whisper to her counterpart, “Ava! Remember her?”
