Although Tom Hardy‘s Star Wars: The Last Jedi cameo was cut — he was to portray a Stormtrooper with a Southern drawl who recognizes Finn — San Francisco will be part of his next project. The 40-year-old English actor, best-known as the title character in Mad Max: Fury Road, for parts in Black Hawk Down and The Revenant, and for taking a selfie with his wife, Charlotte Riley, and with Leonardo DiCaprio on the Oscar Red Carpet using a phone that has a Tom Hardy sticker on it has been in Atlanta shooting scenes for the forthcoming Venom, and S.F. is next.
A tipster wrote to us saying that their building near Edinburgh Castle got a notice announcing that filming would happen on the evening of Wednesday, Jan. 24.
Venom is a spinoff of the Spider-Man franchise and intended to be the first foray into Sony’s Marvel Universe, and much of the comic from which it’s derived took place in San Francisco. Hardy takes over the role of Eddie Brock, played by Topher Grace in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
An evil journalist — yea! — Brock “begins terrorizing Spider-Man and everyone else in New York after bonding with the alien lifeforce/suit known as the symbiote,” according to IndieWire. If you have no idea what the Venom character looks like, it’s sort of like the xenomorph queen from Alien — and Hardy had a bit of a tough time inside it.
But he had an easier time in this Esquire spread from a year ago, in which he spoke about his decade-plus of sobriety and his bad-boy image. Supposedly, he’s set to play Elton John in a biopic, but that project sounds like it’s in limbo.
In any event: Venom! Sadly, Spider-Man himself isn’t in it the film, but Michelle Williams, who plays “She-Venom,” and Riz Ahmed are. And if we don’t see them in a couple weeks, we only have nine more months to wait. Venom’s release date is currently Oct. 5, 2018.
