18 Reasons' Chinese Medicine for Moderns, Part 1: Winter Foods

Seasonal Food for Health: Winter

Where: 18 Reasons, 18 Reasons, 593 Guerrero (at 18th St.)

When: Mon., Jan. 10, 7-9 p.m.

Cost: $25 for 18 Reasons members; otherwise $35

The rundown: Who doesn't totally dig the traditional Chinese fusing of food and medicine, at least for the aesthetics of it: eating stuff classified as warming when it's 48 degrees outside. Next week at 18 Reasons, holistic practitioner Daniela Freda breaks down the cosmology of Chinese medicine for us here in 21st-century San Francisco, where a Delfina pizza and a glass of rosé are a hell of a lot more accessible than a pot of Chinese herbal soup. On the agenda: key foods (with recipes) for detoxing and strengthening, followed by a tasting of herbal teas and a bowl of fortifying bone broth (sorry vegetarians ― this one isn't for you). By the way, this winter session is the first of a series of four18 Reasons classes in 2011, updating Chinese medicinal principles according to the seasons.
