500 Days of Grilled Cheese and Bill Clinton Will Have to Eat Somewhere Else

The past 24 hours in gossip, innuendo, and cold hard facts about the San Francisco food scene.

We agree with comedian Demitri Martin that “nobody ever really talks about a grilled cheese sandwich unless they want one.” It's hard to even think of them without wanting one. Thankfully, there's going to be another 500 places to get the gooey sandwich.

Grub Street shares, via SFist, the budding grilled cheese empire The Melt, from Jonathan Kaplan (Flip camera creator, grilled-cheese lover) with sandwich consulting input from Michael Mina, will open its first location later this month at 115 New Montgomery (at Minna). Two other city locations are to follow: 345 Spear (at Folsom) and Pier 1 (at Embarcadero), before Kaplan takes over the world with the other 497 planned locations.

Bill Clinton use to love this place, but it looks as though the Jasmine Tea House may be a goner. Bernalwood reports the sudden shutter of the Mission Street restaurant, and the fact all signs point to it being permanent: papered windows and a for-sale post on Craigslist.

There is a food-focused market (no alcohol, no cigarettes) headed to the Haight. Haighteration shares that the owner, Fawzi “Ameen” Swalim, has been thwarted by electrical issues, but hopes to open the neighborhood market before the end of the year (798 Haight at Scott).
