Anchor Brewing, the City's largest beer producer, announced the opening of a temporary beer garden in Giants Parking Lot A in Mission Rock. Set to open in March, The Yard will feature a parade of shops and vendors operating out of repurposed shipping containers. The outdoor-bar-meets-public-space offers a glimpse into what Anchor has in store for the rapidly-developing neighborhood.
[jump] The massive Mission Rock Project is well underway, slated to introduce more than eight acres of parks, a thousand residential units and up to 1.5 million-square feet of office space to this section of the City. At the center of that construction is Anchor's Pier 48 facility, a colossal brewery, restaurant, and craft beer museum, that will quadruple their capacity when it opens sometime in the near future. As for a specific date, Anchor declines to set anything in stone, stating only that construction will continue through 2015.
In the meantime, baseball and beer lovers alike will have a new place to congregate nearby — The Yard sits directly adjacent to McCovey Cove, in a parking area that was sorely lacking any sort of commercial activity. Artistic renderings suggest ample space for food trucks, an amphitheater-like viewing area of the Cove, and communal seating lined up alongside the outdoor bar.
While fans of Anchor are sure to enjoy a wide range of their products on draft, the brewery offers no hint of any guest beers on tap. “We are always looking for fun and innovative ways of bringing the community together while enjoying one of our Anchor beers,” says CEO Keith Greggor. “Giants fans have been enjoying Anchor Steam Beer for years, and now we can provide another opportunity for fans and other visitors to gather, drink Steam and try all of our other beers too.”
The Yard is poised to become a welcomed addition to the AT&T Park tailgating scene; it will be open seven days a week, throughout the year, and its appeal is likely to extend beyond even the sports and suds crowd. (Apparently, these people actually exist.)
