Finally, locals may have a reason to venture into that wild, tourist-infested block of real estate known as Ghirardelli Square: good wine. San Francisco-based winery, Bluxome Street Winery, will open an outpost in one of the city's prime tourist destinations, meaning your visit with your relatives from Omaha should be a little more pleasant from now on.
[jump] One of five urban wineries based in San Francisco, Bluxome Street accepted an invitation from Jamestown Properties, the same company that developed New York City's massively successful Chelsea Market, and revamped 400 Post Street, which had been the home of the giant Disney Store. For the proprietors of Bluxome Street, it was too good an opportunity to pass up.
The developers are bringing in the big names to beef up the appeal of the moribund but historic square, including Fairmont Hotel and a new restaurant by celebrity chef, James Beard award nominee, and former trombonist Jonathan Waxman, formerly of Chez Panisse and the force behind New York's Barbuto. Le Marais Bistro, a planned 5,000 square foot restaurant from the owners of the Marina's La Marais Bakery, is slated to open in March, 2016.
“To be part of that, we're incredibly excited,” said Bluxome partner, Peter Chouinard.
Bluxome, which focuses primarily on wines from Russian River valley grapes, has been a conduit for younger adults, who many not have much experience with wine, to learn about wine culture, Chouinard said. The new location won't be terribly different, except that in Ghirardelli Square, they'll have access to a broader slice of San Francisco's 16 million annual visitors, with potentially up to 25,000 tourists passing through the square on the busiest days.
Bluxome's new location features terrific views of the bay and Alcatraz, said Chouinard. As for its opening date, he's dreaming of opening by Fleet Week later this fall, but with the permitting process being as laborious as it is, at the very latest, Bluxome should be able to open its door before the holidays.
