Filipino Night Market ‘Undiscovered SF’ Returns Saturday, July 21

After last year's successful run, 2018's iteration is bigger and better — and at a new location.

While the Bay Area awaits the permanent location of FOB Kitchen in Temescal, we have the return of a spectacular monthly event dedicated to Filipino food and culture to tide us over. Having packed the Old Mint several times last summer and fall, UNDISCOVERED SF returns this Saturday, July 21, to a new venue and a slightly earlier time slot.

As a part of the slowly developing, two-year-old cultural district Soma Pilipinas — a large area of Central SoMa that covers the section from Second to 11th streets between Market and Brannan streets — UNDISCOVERED is the biggest acknowledgement of the longtime presence of Filipino in a neighborhood whose imminent upzoning and redevelopment threatens to exacerbate their dispersal. Produced by nonprofit business incubator Kultivate Labs, it’s a showcase of Filipino street food, music, dance, and fashion, plus it’s free to attend — which is why 35,000 people came through the course of 2017. And this is the first of four for the season, which take place every third Saturday of the month with DJ QBert on the decks.

So this Saturday from 4-10 p.m., at 401 Minna St. (the parking lot behind the Chronicle building), you can find the best of Third Wave Filipino food, like adobo nachos from Mestiza, skin-on pork belly lechón from Jeepney Guy, or ube coconut doughnuts from Hookt Donuts. The Gran Oriente Filipino Masonic Temple on Jack London Alley near South Park may be “Dedicated to the Supreme Architect of the Universe,” but you might find yourself worshipping at the altar of Lumpia Company‘s bacon cheeseburger lumpia with BBQ sauce and 7th West‘s coconut mojito.

Once widely considered an overlooked Asian cuisine or relegated to mom-and-pop turo-turo restaurants where you point to order, Filipino food is officially coming into its own.
