Food Critics Free To Write Scathing Reviews, Court Rules

Whew! It's good to know restaurant critics are safe from being slapped with libel suits over bad reviews, at least in Northern Ireland. In what's being called “an important victory for press freedom,” a Belfast court overturned a jury's decision yesterday to award 25,000 pounds (about $50,000) to Goodfellas pizzeria after a negative review about the joint was penned for the Irish News by food critic Caroline Workman, who apparently came down hard on just about every aspect of the experience.

But what, honestly, can you expect from a restaurant named for an (albeit great) gangster movie? That almost became one hell of an expensive pie. For their part, the Goodfellas in question called the ruling “a farce of the judicial system.”
