We're pretty sure This Is Spinal Tap wasn't the kind of movie John Clark and Gayle Pirie had in mind to accompany their Frenchified Cal Cuisine when Foreign Cinema launched 11 years ago. We reckon the novel(-ish) idea of running film reels against a high wall was inspired by images of Catherine Deneuve, not Christopher Guest, but time changes everything.
When the restaurant celebrates its 11-year mark this Friday, diners can glance up from their fruits de mer platters or chocolate pots de crème to chortle at Rob Reiner's spandex-sheathed rockumentary ― chortle extra loud, maybe, since the restaurant plans to hand out a commemorative cocktail called the 11. Foreign's bar manager Bryan Ranere e-mailed a description: “a 'big bottom' of fruit consisting of fresh Capay Farms organic strawberries and an organic fig vinegar, High West Silver Whiskey, and a splash of soda.” “Big Bottom,” of course, is Spinal Tap's booty-love sendup.
The 11 sounds totally delicious, especially if the strawberry cushion turns out thick enough. Like the song says, “The bigger the cushion, the sweeter the pushin'.”
