Friday Eight: A Rally for Little City Gardens, S.F.'s Last Commercial Farm

Plus the newest Popson's opens Monday, MINA Test Kitchen announces its newest project, and Guy Fieri says the kookiest shit!

[jump] Help Save Little City Gardens, S.F.'s Last Commercial Farm
At 214 Cotter Street in the Excelsior is Little City Gardens, a six-year-old plot of land that claims to be the last commercial farm in the city and county of San Francisco — and it's facing eviction. Next Saturday, May 21, at 11 a.m., a coalition of organizations will rally to thwart its demolition (at the hands of a private school that wants to erect buildings on the parcel). The Mission Terrace Land Preservation Committee, New Mission Terrace Improvement Association, and San Francisco Urban Agriculture Alliance will all be there to help keep this plucky, three-quarters-of-an-acre organic farm, which is run by Caitlyn Galloway and a small volunteer staff. It's no mere hobby, either: Little City sells produce to restaurants like Bar Tartine, Californios, and Outerlands, with a subscription service providing stuff for 20 to 30 families, too.

Popsons Opens Monday in the Warfield
There's been a Popsons for several months now at 330 Townsend, but it's temporary as the building is slated for eventual demolition. That's why Alvin Garcia and Chef Adam Rosenblum have opened another location not terribly far away, at 998 Market in the Warfield. Beyond seasonal burgers, a chili burger, and fries, Popsons has Zinfandel and Sauvignon Blanc from its own label on tap. Spiffy!

Mister Jiu's Adds a Bar Menu

Everything's $8, and it's all full of snacky things, like pan-fried buns, prawn toast, daikon rice cakes, and “munchies” (pickles, jerky, nuts). Mister Jiu's (28 Waverly), we love you already.

International Smoke Is the Next MINA Test Kitchen Project
Michael Mina and cookbook author Ayesha Curry will collaborate on the next iteration of the MINA Test Kitchen (2120 Greenwich). International Smoke will run Wednesdays through Saturdays, now that The Company's run is over. It's not as focused on a single regional cuisine like its predecessors; rather, International Smoke will focus on smoked meats and barbecue, with family-style dishes like Thai BBQ shrimp chili with young coconut, red curry, peas, an a coconut red curry cornbread. Tastier still, there's going to be a Royal BBQ Platter with merguez sausage, char siu pork shoulder, and pollo a la brasa.

Trader Joe's Definitely Looking Close at Fourth and Market Location
How do we know this? Because Hoodline noticed that the chain applied for a liquor license.

Belga Turns One, Throws All-Day Happy Hour
For its first anniversary, Belga (2000 Union) will go bananas on Monday, May 23 with $1 Belgian fries (with house-made garlic aioli, ketchup, and curry ketchup), $1 house-made sausages, and $1 Bavik Pils. Get a temporary tattoo so you can get your pic taken in the photo booth, too.

The 20th Street Block Party Sets a Date
The food's always good, but neither that nor the musical lineup is definite yet. Still, don't make plans for Saturday, Aug. 20. cause you should go to 20th Street no matter what.

Jardiniére Staff Decamps for Seattle
“Seattle Is Pretty Much Game Over: We Will Become Another San Francisco and Vancouver,” opined The Stranger on April 26. Barely two weeks later, Eater Seattle (via Eater SF) reports that the husband-and-wife, chef-and-pastry-chef team of Morgan and Ellie Mueller have left Jardiniére and San Francisco to open The Butcher's Table, a high-end steakhouse in South Lake Union, Seattle.

Five Out-of-Context Guy Fieri Quotes from Success' Guy Fieri Cover Story
“If you cut the tip — well, that’s gonna hurt a lot more, and we might have to rush you to the hospital to see if they can reattach it.”
“I’m not even sure why I have this crap.”
“Yeah, you want to get that sweater right in there in the food.”
“I’ll be serving that over Grape Nuts, and done with a delicious pickled herring mousse right on top.”
“You can now consider me your friend.”
