We must holla out that the falafel-platter-and-gyro phenomenon Halal Guys is opening a new brick-and-mortar Berkeley location on Friday, Jan. 26 with a hella good lunch launch. Notably, the grand opening of the new Berkeley Halal Guys right across from the Downtown Berkeley BART is offering a free lunch to the first 50 people in line.
And there will be a line. Halal Guys’ openings are notorious for their long queues, even when free food isn’t involved. Their Union Square S.F. location that opened last year had people lined up around the block prior to 10 a.m., so you’d better plan to get well before the 11 a.m. opening.
“There will be a DJ, free swag and menu items, and the first 50 people in line will receive a free meal and drink,” the restaurant said in a release. “The first 50 people in line starting at 11 a.m. on Grand Opening day will receive free platters and swag, and freebies will be handed out all day.”
We should note that the free meal deal only applies at the new Berkeley location, not at Union Square. According to Berkeleyside, that Berkeley location has been delivering via Caviar since Jan. 2, but opens for in-house business on Friday.
And yes, late-night Berkeley drunks, your new Halal Guys will be open ‘til 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. They’ll be open at 10 a.m. to midnight Sundays through Thursdays, and 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. on weekends.
Halal Guys started out as a simple Manhattan food cart in 1990, and quickly acquired a cult following among club hoppers and cab drivers. Powered by the popularity of their famed white sauce and red sauce, known colloquially as “Valhalla Sauce” or “Angel Jizz,” Halal Guys now purports to have more than “200 locations in development across the United States, Canada, and Southeast Asia.”
