La Cocina Kicks Off ‘A Week of Women in Food’

Amazing collaborations among female-led restaurants and other foodie businesses, as the pre-eminent foodie nonprofit celebrates International Women's Day all week.

Emma Stone drew further attention top the gender disparities in film by announcing the nominees for Best Picture as “These four men and Greta Gerwig.” Sadly, the restaurant industry is little different than Hollywood in terms of who runs the show. So La Cocina, the exceptional nonprofit and foodie incubator that has launched dozens of thriving businesses owned and operated by women who migrated to the United States, is celebrating the week of International Women’s Day properly.
Starting Monday, March 5 and running through Sunday, March 11, A Week of Women in Food presents nightly collaborations by some of La Cocina’s star alumni, who’ve forged a new path in Bay Area kitchens. As women represent only one in three of the majority owners of American restaurants and one in five head chef roles — in spite of the fact that every other culinary school graduate is a woman — it’s up to somebody to rectify the situation.
Things kick off tonight (March 5) at El Buen Comer (3435 Mission St.) where chef/owner Isabel Caudillo and Sarah Rich of Rich Table will join forces in a Mexican-inspired feast. Tomorrow, March 6, Preeti Mistry and Reem Assil take the helm together at Reem’s California (3301 E. 12th St., Oakland) with female winemakers from Belharra Wines, beer from Calicraft, and a peek at Oakland’s shortly-to-open bottle shop Proof. On Wednesday, Rasoi‘s Heena Patel arrives at The Workshop at State Bird Provisions to cook with chef Nicole Krasinski.
Saturday’s event might be the most fun, as guests will take a “boozy bus ride” from La Cocina’s HQ on Folsom Street in the Mission to the Hayward factory that makes tamales for Alicia Villanueva of Alicia’s Tamales Los Mayas, along with the kitchen crew of Gábriela Camara’s Cala with an assist from St. George Spirits , Del Maguey Mezcal, and Cali Craft Brewing Co..
