Mother's Day Options: Nib Buns, Pizza, and a Picnic

For Mother’s Day, the chance to wake up late to a hot bowl of coffee and fluffy pancakes in my stylish-yet-comfy robe (totally exists!) sounds fab. That, or getting my family to brave the crazy lines at Tartine Bakery while I kick back at home or wait in the sun at Dolores Park. Tartine’s orange and cinnamon sugared morning bun next to a buttery chocolate croissant remain menu must-haves, sticky fingers and all!

For this once-a-year chillax session, maybe include the delectable and babka-esque chocolate nib bun by Dandelion Chocolate's pastry chef Lisa Vega — the roasted chocolate powder on the exterior is a familiar yet pleasing twist. If you stumble with how exactly to tell mom you love her in your card, Recchiuti Confections has nine ways to show and tell via a nine-piece collection that has lavender vanilla, lemon verbena and tarragon grapefruit truffles — the grapefruit is my personal fave.

[jump] Likewise, a mixed box of buttercream-filled beautiful French cookies known as macarons from Napoleon's in the Westfield are worth the treat — and better yet, the lychee ginger version with hints of Gewürztraminer from Navarro benefits La Cocina. Traditional flavors, including a special strawberry-champagne version (pictured), along with chocolate dipping options—called Maca’Leons— also abound. Handmade, organic passion fruit caramel truffles from the newly opened Sixth Course intrigue (thank you for the hot tip, Maggie Engebretson). Mom should appreciate the Sixth Course Champagne fizz and whiskey-neat treats while you’re at it.

Reservations at the three-course Foreign Cinema brunch make for a chic, filling and encouraging meal, with the sun coming through every which way. The kitchen crew has long mastered egg dishes and the bubbly list is thoughtful. Or maybe consider nabbing the oozy goodness of some craft cocktails, thin-crusted wood-fired pizza and antipasti at Beretta – score one for the breeders! Off the Grid Picnic at the Presidio with food truck-y fare beckons and is also sunny and fun: Dispatch your husband and offspring and bid them bring you wings (Wing Wings), grits (Sugar Foot Grits), sandwiches (Fat Face), and pizza (Del Popolo). There is a Mother’s Day special that should win you brownie points for at least half a year with your mom at the OTG picnic: for $100, nab an upper lawn reserved spot, $50 in food and drink vouchers and up to six chairs and a table to enjoy your feast. Voila!

Nearby, it’s also fun to bowl (with chilled Headlands Point Bonita beer at the ready) at the Presidio Bowling alley. Or take in a vintage Disney film in the gorgeous cineplex at the Walt Disney Family Museum. The Presidio also has its own patio sweet spot with cozy blankets, soft tacos, margaritas and fresh chips at the nearby Arguello (inside the Presidio Officers’ Club) from chef Traci Des Jardins. If mom likes hot sauce, ask for an extra batch of the habanero goodness here.

And whatever you do, call your mother!
