Mourad Starts Lunch, the Cavalier Rolls Out Sunday Roasts

Two relatively new SOMA restaurants have decided to expand their offerings.

Mourad, the highly regarded and stunningly capacious ground-floor tenant at 140 New Montgomery, has ventured into lunch terrain. On weekdays from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m., diners can gorge on Mourad Lahlou’s salmon with zucchini, cucumber, roe, and basil; basteeya duck with rhubarb, young almond, and verjus; and couscous with brassicas, brown butter, and preserved lemon. Sweet tooth throbbing on ya? Pastry Chef Melissa Chou’s lunch dessert menu includes panna cotta with cherries, rose, and black sesame. And if you really just have no responsibilities beyond enjoying yourself for the remainder of the afternoon, sit back with a Corazon el Fuego (mazcal, tequila, the Iranian honey-vinegar known as sekanjabin, cassis, and habanero).

[jump] Meanwhile, at the Cavalier, Executive Chef Jennifer Puccio has added Steven Dustin (of NYC’s the Harrison and Monument Lane) as Chef de Cuisine, and with him comes a fine British tradition that ought to do well here in the land of brunch: Sunday roasts. Starting this weekend and through the “end of summer” (a slippery term where October can be nicer than July), patrons can feast on prime rib, leg of lamb, or roasted porchetta with vegetables, Yorkshire pudding, red wine, and beef au jus. Arguing over Arsenal versus Manchester United is strictly optional, but at $70 for two, it’s perfect for anyone who envisions one long, satisfying meal before winding down for the work week ahead.

If you’re already obliged to visit mum and savor some Marmite from her cupboard on Sundays, consider stopping by the Cavalier’s Blue Bar for an oyster-and-rosé happy hour from 3-5:30 p.m. (a dozen oysters and a bottle of rosé for only $30).

There will be no complaining about summer fog once you've been by. Do you know how drizzly it is over the West Midlands?
