Open-Close Report: Hello, Taboon, S.F.’s Only Kosher Bakery!

A Giants-themed restaurant at SFO and an EDM boba cafe in the Richmond will open next year, plus Souvla takes a break, Rintaro adds lunch, and The Gastropig serves your inner #baconslut.

Akira Sushi (1634 Bush). Hoodline reports that Pac Heights got this snazzy new Japanese restaurant, open for lunch and dinner, that specializes in sushi and sashimi as well as seasonal kaiseke cuisine.

Chez Marius (4063 24th St.) An off-shoot of Glen Park staple Le P’tit Laurent, Provencal restaurant Chez Marius takes over the former Le Zinc space in Noe Valley. Hoodline reports that the look won’t change much, but there will be a fire pit for toasting marshmallows on the expanded outdoor patio.

Lucia’s (2016 Shattuck, Berkeley). Eater reports that this 75-seat, Brooklynesque pizzeria with veggies grown from its own garden has opened for dinner in Berkeley, with lunch to debut next month.

Oakland Tea Parlor (inside Starline Social Club, 2236 M.L.K. Way, Oakland ). Starline is no stranger to change, having pivoted to a Burmese restaurant not long ago. Now, during the day, the restaurant-slash-venue will be Oakland Tea Parlor, for which chef Nate Berrigan-Dunlop will serve tea sandwiches and other light bites Monday to Friday, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. (plus tea).

Rintaro (82 14th St.). Inside Scoop reports that the delightful, two-year-old izakaya is now open for lunch as well as dinner — but only for a very narrow window, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.

Una Pizza Napoletana (210 11th St.) A few blocks from Rintaro is this pizzeria that for a very long time had been dinner-only. Not anymore: Una Pizza Napoletana is now open for lunch, Wednesdays through Fridays, 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Taboon (132 Sixth St.) Noting that its timing is fortuitous after the closure of Oakland’s Grand Bakery, Eater squeals with glee at the arrival of Israeli-Jewish Taboon in SoMa, the only kosher bakery in San Francisco. Look for lots of challah, rugelach, bagels, pita, babka, and more. It will be closed on Fridays after 2 p.m. and all day Saturday in observance of the Sabbath, but will stay open very, very late on Thursdays: 2:30 a.m., after many bakers have started their next morning’s shift.

A Giants-themed restaurant (SFO, Terminal 3). Under chef Charlie Ayers, whom Inside Scoop claims “has been a chef for everyone from Google to Mötley Crüe,” the Giants are planning a restaurant to open late in 2017, full of crazy crab sandwiches, Gilroy garlic fries … and replica World Series trophies.

1951 Coffee (2410 Channing Way, Berkeley). Next month, Doug Hewitt and Rachel Taber’s non-profit that trains refugees in the ways of the barista will open an 1,1760-square-foot cafe of its own in Berkeley’s First Presbyterian Church. Named for the year of the UN’s Convention on Refugees, it’ll serve coffee from Verve and Algorithm in Berkeley, plus locally sourced pastries.

The Gastropig (2123 Franklin, Oakland). The team behind a forthcoming food hall in Uptown Oakland, Newberry Market, will also open The Gastropig in early 2017, serving an egg- and pork-heavy menu that features a #BaconSlut sandwich (applewood-smoked bacon and an egg over easy, plus cheddar and Aleppo chili aioli, on brioche). And you know there will be avocado toast.

Gosu (1014 Clement). Richmond Blog notes that an EDM-themed tea bar with Asian snacks and desserts will open underneath a healing center next month, knitting together the millennial adorations for boba and dance music — for now, anyway. Proprietor Joey Train told Eater that as trends come and go and people get bored, he’ll switch it up. As clubs go, it’s a tiny space, but it will be full of LED screens and video games. Gosu will stay open late, too: until midnight on weeknights and 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.


Les Clos (234 Townsend). Mark Bright’s restaurant is closing, and Big Night Restaurant Group will open its sixth project, the Parisian, 50-seat Petit Marlowe Wine Bar and Oysterette very near the mothership, Marlowe. With a Carrera marble bar, banquette seating, and an oversized antique bookcase, it should be a visual stunner — but we’re more into the classic dishes from chef Jennifer Puccio, desserts from Emily Luchetti, Burgundy-heavy wine list (also from bright, who will become a Wine Advisor), and the raw bar. Look for it in March 2017.

Kuleto’s (221 Powell). The 25-year-old Northern Italian restaurant inside the Villa Florence Hotel off Union Square will close as of New Year’s Eve, the Chronicle reports.

Ichi Sushi + Ni Bar (3369 Mission). Although it’s not closing outright, health issues plaguing chef-owner Tim Archuleta have forced him and his wife Erin to return their acclaimed Japanese restaurant to its original digs across the street and up the block, at 3282 Mission. Inside Scoop reports that once Tim recovers from surgery, the Archuletas expect to reopen the second restaurant, and there’s a GoFundMe to help them out. Best of luck and speedy recovery!

Green Heart Foods (3321 20th St.) Hoodline reports that the cafe will close after three years, and focus on its catering business, largely as a supplier to food delivery businesses like Postmates.

Stelladoro Pizza (808 Divisadero). Man, the churn on Divis is almost as harsh as the churn on Valencia. Hoodline reports that Stelladoro’s closure is “until further notice” but looks pretty permanent.

Souvla (517 Hayes). It’s only temporary, don’t worry! The Hayes Valley location of this soon-to-be-three-strong Greek mini-chain will close from Jan. 1-11 for renovations, says Hoodline. Head to the other Souvla at 531 Divisadero during that time.
