Petit Crenn Opens in Hayes Valley Aug. 11

Although we’ve been quietly hoping for Gabriela Cámara’s Cala to open on Fell Street all summer, Hayes Valley has been pretty quiet. That’s about to change, now that Dominique Crenn’s newest project, Petit Crenn, is now set to open its doors Aug. 11.

[jump] The chef-owner of the doubly Michelin-starred Atelier Crenn is embracing the masses — as defined by Hayes Valley standards, anyway — with a casual, all-day-and-night spot anchored by a five-course seafood prix fixe dinner meant to evoke Crenn’s childhood in Brittany.

Mornings will see pastries, omelets, and oeufs a la coque, while lunch will be light-sounding fare like crepes, salads, and tartines. Dinner gets a little more rustic, with whole fish grilled over a wood-fired stove.

If you’ve ever peeked at Atelier Crenn’s Yelp page, it’s an amusing account of people who were basically thunderstruck with the chef’s facility with presentation, leaving mash notes as inarticulate as a seventh-grader with puppy love (“Everything was delish!,” “Mind = blown!”). How Crenn brings her uppermost-echelon aesthetic to an accessible price point will be fascinating to watch.

Petit Crenn, 609 Hayes St., 415-621-5482.
