Pollo Campero Gets Burned, Charles Chocolates Appears to Melt

SFoodie thought Fridays were supposed to be about Charlie Sheen-grade fun. But local food news late last week had us longing for Monday already.

Inside Scoop got Friday off to a hopeful start, taking note of the Austrian hemp-laced cheese Hanfutschli on offer at Quince. No, you can't get high from it (the weed connection: it contains hemp oil, and the exterior is peppered with toasted hemp seeds). Sounds harmless enough, but remember: This is Quince, where being stuck with the check has to be one of the biggest buzzkills in San Francisco.

In further Friday buzzkill news from Scoop: Last Thursday's Planning Commission hearing about the Pollo Campero trying to get a conditional use permit to open at 2740 Mission Street. Things, shall we say, did not go well.

Not to be outdone, Grub Street filed Friday's biggest Debbie Downer scoop of all: Charles Chocolates' retail presence seems to have folded at Westfield Centre and at its Emeryville factory. [Oops! We mistakenly passed along Grub Street's misreporting: The Emeryville factory closed over a year ago.] One possibly hopeful caveat: Details ― or even confirmation, for that matter ― were nonexistent.
