Pres a Vi's Prix Fixe Rewards Early Birds

Pres a Vi's duck buns.

Tucked deep into the Presidio, Pres a Vi (One Letterman Drive at Presidio) is easy to overlook, but well worth the effort to find, particularly if you're able to go early. From 5 to 6:30 p.m., the restaurant offers a nightly prix fixe: three courses (appetizer, main, and dessert) for $30. Not unusual for restaurants these days, but Pres a Vi's feels like a particularly good deal.

On a recent visit, we started with one of the most popular dishes in the house, simple yet flavor-packed duck buns with hoisin barbecue sauce. We could've made a meal out of a couple of orders of these, but were fortunate enough to save room for a beautiful piece of wild Alaskan halibut cooked in a thin potato jacket, with a hearty sauce made with hijiki, shiso, and soy butter.

That pretty much did us in, so we took our dessert to go, which meant we had to bypass some of the tempting frozen items in favor of something that would last a bit longer. It was fun to discover later that night that our takeout container of profiteroles was artistically decorated with the awesomely rich dark chocolate and caramel sauces, plated as if we were eating it there.
