Exactly one year ago this month, we came up with a swell (or should I say swill) list of places in the Bay Area to receive a discounted cup of coffee on National Coffee Day. Would that this year’s research have yielded such an equally compelling set of results. In reaching out to cafés and roasters and others of that ilk, we can officially declare that, like God and the novel, the telephone is dead. Nail the banner on the burgermeister’s door, then sound the clarion call.
[jump] It’s not that you’d expect to reach the high priests of bean-dom hidden inside the headquarters of Blue Bottle, Ritual and Sightglass on a first ring. But surely by the eighth, the ninth, the tenth attempt? Nope, nope, and nope. Even when we did reach a happy barista, it quickly became clear that this pseudo-celebration of capitalism in nitro might only exist in the mind’s eye of 2014, a realm with access privileges limited to the likes of Doctors Who and Strange. Not since the massacre on Saint Valentine’s Day in 1929 has a “holiday” been less enthusiastically received upon mention.
Here are our favorite responses to the question, “Will you be offering a discount or special on National Coffee Day?”:
Marin Coffee Roasters: “Besides being open?”
The San Anselmo Coffee Roastery: “I didn’t even know there was a National Coffee Day.”
B2 Coffee: “No, not really.”
Zocalo Coffeehouse: “I don’t know. If we do, we’ll post it on Facebook.”
M.H. Bread and Butter: “On Tuesday? No.”
Acre Coffee: “Pause. Laughter.”
Here, then, are the milky, watered down results of our survey, but don’t take our word for it. Feel free to give these establishments a call for confirmation on the sacred day itself. We’re certain someone’s standing by, eager to answer each and every one of your caffeine-seeking queries.
Peet’s Coffee and Tea
Free small coffee when you order a baked good, oatmeal or fresh food item. Brewing Major Dickason’s blend. Plus this just in from Twitter.
In a salute to National Coffee Month!, you can buy a cup of coffee for a quarter until September ends (on Wednesday).
Two answers here: Store One was hush hush, saying they’d announce something on the big day itself. Store Two: For every pound of coffee you buy, they’ll buy a tree for a farmer (the species of tree or whereabouts of said farmer TBD).
The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
A store employee claimed ignorance; Twitter, again, did not.
Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
Free glazed doughnut + free cup of coffee

A special brew for the day called Maple Wood, cold espresso with pure maple syrup plus maple extract over ice with milk. Good to pair with their homemade scones and banana bread.

Highwire Coffee Roasters
They came up with Winter Coat, a special debut brew, on the spot. Combines the Howling Wolf, their nitro cold coffee, with chocolate ganache. Kudos to them for thinking on their feet!

This article is dedicated to the late Lauren Bacall and her sultry purr, “Around here we don't like coffee, we love it!”
