Mission D&A Rounds the Halfway Mark With a Family Meal Pop-Up

Mission D&A, the monthly rotating pop-up at 2817 24th St., is two months into its five-month tenure before David Nayfeld and Angela Pinkerton move onto their permanent project, Che Fico. For its third concept, running on Thursdays through Saturdays, Sept. 8 – Oct. 8, at 7:30 p.m., the chefs will take inspiration from family meal, the restaurant term for what workers get before or after their shifts. While the menu is a little cheeky (including an “Olive…Garden Salad” and a vegetable curry called “Walk-in’s Bounty”), reservations are highly recommended as there is but one seating nightly and the duo has been selling out every single night.

The Decaffeination of the Castro Continues

Artís (506 Castro) called it quits over the weekend, only days after Eureka! threw in the towel. Hoodline notes that the chain’s other location at 537 Octavia remains open, and as the company focuses on that store and one in Berkeley, the hyper-cuthroat Castro coffee-scape was not a factor in the decision to close down. However, it should be noted that Artís had sidewalk seating for a while but was forced to get rid of it.

Royal Cuckoo Market Applying for In-Store Beer and Wine Sales

If you get Royal Cuckoo Market (3368 19th St.) mixed up with Royal Cuckoo Organ Lounge (3302 Mission) some 10 blocks to the south, keeping them separated in your mind might get a little harder, as Capp Street Crap reports that the former has applied to serve beer and wine on premises.

More Retail in BART Means Dunkin’ Donuts, Maybe

The 19th Street BART Station already smells like both a subway and like Subway, and the Business Times reports that BART is scheduled to permit yet more retail, specifically Dunkin’ Donuts, Oaklandish, and Ghirardelli Chocolate.

…And Ghirardelli Is Having a Party

A benefit for Project Open Hand, the Ghirardelli Chocolate Festival is next Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 10-11. Tickets ($20-$50) get you insight into the chocolate-making process, and tons of samples from makers of gourmet desserts and premium spirits (as well as from vintners and brewers). There’s a hands-free “Earthquake” Sundae Eating Contest, chef demos (Angela Pinkerton and David Nayfeld of Nayfeld Pinkerton Project, Edward Martinez of Lazy Bear, and a pastry chef from nearby Waxman’s) and more.

Manos Nouveau to Get Sold, Chef-Owner Proudly Defiant

I appreciate the politeness that goes into press releases that begin “To whom it may concern” — so much nicer than “Dear Ms. Lawrence” — and in my inbox this morning was a letter from Manuel Montalban, chef-owner of Castro French-Latin restaurant Manos Nouveau (3970 17th St.) He is apparently selling the business — which took over the former Pica Pica space, after leaving a Mission location that now houses Californios — but closes with an uplifting note: “To our loyal customers, look for us in forgotten and failed spaces, because that is where I find the greatest inspiration.”

New Drone Regulations Go Into Effect Today

According to the FAA, drones have to weigh less than 55 pounds, can’t fly at night, can’t go more than 100 m.p.h. or above 400 feet, and can’t shoot lasers at you with a pre-recorded “pew-pew-pew” sound. According to CNBC, we might be getting Domino’s delivered by drone as soon as next year, following a pilot program in New Zealand.
