Sprudge and Cafes Nationwide Raise Money for the ACLU

Including Sightglass, Andytown, Pinhole, Wrecking Ball, Equator, Tartine, and all 25 Blue Bottle locations!

Although civil libertarians nationwide would no doubt prefer to have a different situation on their hands, the American Civil Liberties Union has been raking in donations since Pres. Trump’s election. In response to the travel Muslim ban implemented last Friday, the ACLU took in more than $24 million over the weekend, the New York Times reported (causing them to knock on Y Combinator’s door for some assistance in wealth management). As we’ve noted before, the ACLU’s Northern California affiliate is ready to take on the Trump administration, but these cash infusions have helped increase the national organization’s legal budget significantly.

Building on this momentum, the ordinarily apolitical coffee-obsessed website Sprudge has marshaled dozens of coffee brands and cafes nationwide to fight the executive order banning immigration from seven predominantly Muslim countries. Adding that normally, they’d like to simply stick to coffee, Sprudge has organized an ACLU fundraiser running this weekend (Friday Feb. 3 – Sunday, Feb. 5) wherein they will match the first $500 raised by the first 25 to sign up.

Initially, there were 125 participants, but the number exploded overnight to include more than 271 locations, including the Bay Area’s own Sightglass, Andytown, Tartine Manufactory, Pinhole, Equator, Wrecking Ball, Verve, Peet’s and all 25 Blue Bottle locations, as well as well-known roasters like Intelligentsia and Stumptown. See the full (and seemingly ever-expanding list) here.

Starbucks is not among the companies taking part, but let it be said that Starbucks has taken its own stand on behalf of refugees, pledging to hire 10,000 baristas who came to this country seeking a better life.

It’s going to be a rainy weekend, so warm yourself up with a latte. The Constitution depends on you!
