Sunday Nights at Foxsister Mean Chicken Dinner

These 24th Street Party People do what Korean food does best (plus there's brunch pop-up through mid-August).

The fox has entered the henhouse and brought you dinner. Brandon Kirksey’s nine-month-old Korean restaurant on 24th Street has aimed for visceral satisfaction over true authenticity ever since it opened, and now Foxsister has debuted a Sunday night dinner special centered on the unbeatably delicious phenomenon of Korean fried chicken.

For $25, Winner Winner Chicken Dinner gets you all three flavors —  O.G., sweet-and-spicy, and garlic-soy — plus four types of banchan, including kimchi, pickled cucumbers, a slightly spicy daikon, and an addictive bowl of pickled portabellas. As a sop to the health-conscious, there’s a fairly sizeable salad speckled with sesame seeds, but second only to the chicken, the star is a big sizzling platter of kimchi fried rice.

Something about Foxsister’s dark, divey atmosphere lends itself to screening old movies on mute, and on a recent visit it was occasionally hard to focus on the chicken without blurting out Christopher Lloyd’s lines in Back to the Future. But then you take another bite and suddenly, the flux capacitor in your taste buds brings you back to 1985, especially bouncing off another cube of daikon.

Additionally, through Sunday, Aug. 12, Foxsister has a Saturday-and-Sunday brunch pop-up called Benedict, which serves exactly the egg dish its name implies, along with bottomless mimosas and Bloody Marys. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., you get fresh-baked sticky buns and thick-cut bacon along with an Italian Benedict (prosciutto, rapini, garlic, chile, and roasted tomato hollandaise), a Muir Woods (maitake mushrooms, caramelized onions, pea vines, and black pepper hollandaise). Think, McFly, think: What’s on the Foxsister Benny? If you guessed fried chicken with scallions and spicy hollandaise, you’re right. But if that’s not what you’re feeling, you can always take yourself to the Enchantment Under the Sea Dance and have a Crab Roll Benny (Dungeness crab, avocado, buttered brioche, and herb hollandaise). Because nobody calls you chicken. Nobody.
