Oakland's Eat Real Festival, the second of two back-to-back food festivals taking place over the next two weekends, isn't just about street food, though 80 carts and trucks will be in attendance. There are also urban homesteading demonstrations and competitions, a beer and wine garden, a farmers market, musical performances ― and a literary fest.
Though it hasn't gotten nearly the same media attention as the other aspects, the three-day Eat Real Lit Fest, also held August 27-29, is bringing together dozens of food writers. Panelists include food makers like Rachel Saunders and Richie Nakano, well-known blogers like Chez Pim's Pim Techamuanvivit and Ethicurean's Bonnie Azab Powell, cookbook authors such as Andrea Nguyen ― not to mention SFoodie's very own John Birdsall. It's kind of like the Ocean's Twelve of Bay Area eater-writers.
