Wednesday Seven: A Sock Hop, Bon Marché's Beer Debuts, Brewcade Goes Fluorescent

Plus Del Popolo is getting ready for a brick-and-mortar, and the NBA has a food truck zipping around town.

[jump] TONIGHT: A Sock Hop
Conspicuous do-gooder Ashley Dickinson (of Kinda Kind with Ashley Lauren) is throwing a sock hop tonight. It's not a corny dance where you have to leave room for the Holy Spirit, but a fundraiser for Glide. Turns out that socks are desperately needed but seldom donated at shelters, so you're encouraged to bring some. In exchange, you can listen to some Motown and drink a beer float made with Tiger Beer and Humphry Slocombe ice cream.
The Great San Francisco Sock Hop, Oct. 21, 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Monarch, 101 Sixth St.

Bon Marché's First Beer Debuts
Bon Marché has been open a while now but the in-house brewery has yet to be formally unveiled. Master Cicerone and brewmaster Rich Higgins's L'Ouvrier (“The Worker”) will be the first of the massive brasserie's beers, and the launch party is on Thursday, Nov. 5. Nibble on some charcuterie, mushroom beignets, Tartes Lyonaise, and fingerling potatoes with camembert fondue while you air-kiss one another, beer in hand.
Nov. 5, at Bon Marché, 1355 Market, 415-802-1700 or bonmarche-sf.com.

Cosmic Arcade
Who doesn't like to glow under a black light? Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31, Brewcade will be throwing Cosmic Arcade Nights, where Pac-Man and Frogger aficionados are encouraged to wear fluorescent colors that pop under ultraviolet LEDs. There's a costume contest on Halloween with gift certificates as prizes, too. If you're a member of one of those religions that forbids Halloween, relax: Cosmic Arcade Night will happen the first Friday of every month, starting in December.
Cosmic Arcade Night, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30-31, 8 p.m. – closing, at Brewcade, 2200 Market #102, brewcadesf.com.

Del Popolo Pop-Ups
The war rig of food trucks, Del Popolo, is teaming up with Feastly in anticipation of opening a brick-and-mortar location later this fall. They'll be doing pizza-and-antipasto pop-ups on Oct. 28-29 ($39) if you want some naturally leavened pies, braised chicken, winter squash, and (of course wine.

NBA Food Truck
If that's not enough food truck action for you, the NBA is bringing its own to town through Oct. 27. Triangulate its position using #InsidetheNBA and you can enjoy some Shaq’s BBQ Chicken, Kenny “The Jet” Street Dog, Chuck’s Street Meat, and Ernie’s Cheese Grits. Yea, sportball!

Wharf Fest
Here is a reason to go to the Wharf. This Saturday is Wharf Fest, which has live music (because the Hard Rock Cafe is there) and more importantly a chowder competition from noon to 3 p.m. Be aware that you can't just stroll in to that part; you have to buy tix, and they'll probably sell out.
Wharf Fest, Saturday, Oct. 24, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. $15-$20 for the chowder competition.

The Dream
And I just love this Chicago restaurant where the bartender works the room via a rolling cart. Why should dim sum (and, to a lesser extent, quail) be the only things that come to you?
