S.F.-based clarinetist and composer Aaron Novik is like a musician from Boomer times. Not because his music sounds like 1960s rock, but because, like the greats of that generation — including the Grateful Dead, Frank Zappa, and Bob Dylan — Novik brings diverse experiences to the table: metal and classic rock in high school, studies with local jazz improv wizard Ben Goldberg, and the extreme eclecticism of John Zorn. His latest disc, Floating World Vol. 1 (Porto Franco), is a song cycle inspired by Mission District poets. World also features vocals by Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat, Charming Hostess) in settings evoking art and prog-rock, chamber pop, klezmer, and Kurt Weill. See him and feel your IQ rise a point or two.
