In what has now become an annual tradition, director/comedian/weirdo John Waters will host this year’s Burger Boogaloo at Oakland’s Mosswood Park on Saturday, July 1 and Sunday, July 2.
Headlining the festival — which will be celebrating its fifth year — is none other than punk icon Iggy Pop, who — fun fact — turns 70 this year. The topless-more-often-than-not musician will be joined by legendary L.A. punk band X, English rockers Buzzcocks, Japanese garage-rock trio Guitar Wolf, Miami dudes Jacuzzi Boys, “that guy in the rabbit mask who I once hiked to a waterfall in Oahu with” Nobunny, Oakland’s Shannon and the Clams, and at least a dozen more artists and bands.
If you’re a fan of lo-fi, DIY, or grunge, and you haven’t been to Burger Boogaloo yet, then you should 1. slap yourself and 2. go! Spread over the park’s grassy lawn and shaded by (what I assume are) pine trees, Burger Boogaloo is one of the chillest music festivals in town, replete with tasty food, booze galore, and a whole lotta weirdos and freaks. Last year, garage-punk band the Mummies drove their 1966 Pontiac Bonneville Mummies Mobile into the park and played their set on top of the car. In other words, anything goes at Burger Boogaloo, and the weirder it is, the better.
Nab tickets here, and don’t worry, they’re (relatively) cheap. (After all, this is the super-duper expensive Bay Area we’re talking about.)
