In New Spell’s single, “Rain,”the dark-pop San Francisco duo turns their concern for the environment and global warming into a shimmery, inter-galactic delight.
“Is this the ending or where it begins?” coos the band’s lead singer and keyboardist, Leanne Kelly, over rich, textured analog synths. Throughout its roughly four-minute run-time, the song, which Kelly describes as “an apocalyptic dance anthem,” alternates between calmer, brooding periods and explosive symphonic moments.
“Rain” is the first single to be released from the band’s upcoming second album, Of Time. It also, Kelly says, reflects a new chapter for the act since its transition from a trio to a duo almost two years ago.
Catch New Spell at 8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 13 at The Night Light in Oakland. More info here.
