Premiere: “Trust The Music” By J. Lately

The Sebastopol rapper gets motivational in his new track.

In “Trust The Music,” J. Lately’s new release, the Sebastopol-born rapper urges listeners to trust their instincts, and he uses his own success as an example of the perks of doing so.

Over a melodic female vocal sample, the athletic-voiced MC relays tales of his come-up, calling himself a “late bloomer” who used to give out his music for free, before intoning in the hook: “Don’t treat me like I don’t know shit.”

Says Lately: “I find all the time that people want to give you advice on what you should do to achieve your dreams, but rarely [do they] want to actually lend a hand along the way.”

By the song’s second verse, we start to hear of his progress and how he was able to find success on his own terms.  He mentions how he “spent about six-thousand on tour / but [he] came back with seven” and how “out of 14 nights, slept none on the floor / Compared to before, that’s something I’ll support.”

Lately penned the Space Cadet-produced song after returning from his The Good Panda Tour earlier this year, and it’s his first single since the release of his EP, The Good Panda.

In November, Lately will be hitting the road with Locksmith for a 13-date tour that includes stops in Santa Cruz, San Jose, and Sacramento. More info here.
