Fritzmaurice Williams' stage name, Army, is a reference to the time he spent in the U.S. military after graduating from New York's School of the Performing Arts. Following his service, he traded his M-16 rifle for a reggae career that's produced five albums since 2000. Like those of fellow Virgin Islanders Midnite, Dezarie, and Bambu Station, his career has grown through constant touring and polishing his gentle, soulful compositions. His background in gospel and jazz bands seeps through songs like “Jah Reveal It,” which he sings with buttery Nat King Cole–influenced vocals. For his S.F. appearance, Army will be joined by another conscious Virgin Islands singer, Danny I, whose songs discuss redemption over weighty tropical rhythms.
