Augury is the latest in a long line of progressive death-metal bands from Francophone Canada. The progenitor was Voivod, of course, with its sci-fi lyrics and jazz-inflected thrash. Neuraxis, Gorguts, Beneath the Massacre, Martyr, and others followed. Now Augury is making a play to lead the pack. With sweeping, epic compositions that throw psychedelia, jazz fusion, and even funk alongside the blast beats and savage riffing, the band's second CD, Fragmentary Evidence, is one of the best of 2009. We'll see how well the album's astonishingly intricate music works live.
