Catch Dr. Octagon

at the Independent

It’s not unusual for rappers to create aliases. Mac Dre had Boss Tycoon, Thizzele Washington, and Ronald Dregan, and E-40 has Captain Save a Hoe. But no rapper has taken the art of inventing an alter ego as far as Kool Keith has.

First introduced in the San Francisco-recorded 1996 album Dr. Octagonecologyst, Dr. Octagon is a yellow-eyed, green- and silver-skinned, time-traveling gynecologist and surgeon from the planet Jupiter, who has a penchant for killing patients and curing bizarre ailments like chimpanzee acne and moosebumps. And, as if learning about a constantly changing fictional character through song weren’t hard enough (because you don’t have text or images to reference), Keith made staying abreast of Dr. Octagon’s many capers even more difficult by killing him off and resurrecting him, not once, but twice.

It’s now been nine years since Dr. Octagon last died — Dr. Dooom electrocuted him with an electric razor in 2008’s Dr. Dooom 2 — but Keith isn’t ready to drop the moniker yet, as evidenced by his upcoming Dr. Octagon-billed show.
