Three Must-See Acts This Week

Art rock

(with Dirty Projectors) 8 p.m., Thursday, July 18, at The Fillmore. $35;

Deerhunter has always delivered by giving listeners consistently intriguing and enjoyable albums ever since the experimental art punk group formed in 2001. Led by the enigmatic, sharp-witted frontman Bradford Cox, these Atlanta rockers were a stark presence in the city’s underground music scene before creating international buzz with their 2007 sophomore album, Cryptograms. The following year saw the release of Microcastle, a decisively pop-focused record that retains the band’s ability to create emotionally resonant atmospheres and drones in the vein of ’90s shoegaze artists. In 2010, Deerhunter released its fifth album, Halcyon Digest, a multifaceted yet wholly singular work that stands out as one of the most vital indie rock albums of the decade. Their eighth and latest, Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared?, hears an anxious Cox lyrically reflect on death, the worrisome global political climate, and self-identity across 10 eerie, tightly produced tracks. Blending their best traits as a group — melancholic pop songwriting and dreamy atmospheric production — Deerhunter’s eighth album proves that the group becomes more captivating with age.

Young Nudy

8 p.m., Saturday, July 20, at The Masonic. $49.50;

A fast-rising figure, Young Nudy is already a staple within Atlanta’s hip-hop scene, and the mysterious yet attention-grabbing artist is on track to becoming the nation’s next rap icon. The 26-year-old was born and raised in East Atlanta, from the same streets as Gucci Mane and other rap superstars, and was inspired by his cousin 21 Savage to take a career in music seriously after Savage’s rise in 2015. Early supporter and producer Pi’erre Bourne recruited Nudy to collaborate on tracks together, one of the first rappers the burgeoning producer worked with, and Nudy released his 2016 mixtape Slimeball to ecstatic praise from hip-hop fans worldwide. The rapper would release Slimeball 2 and 3 in 2017 and 2018, steadily building momentum with vividly surreal and delirious cuts like “I Got” and the Lil Yachty collab “No Clue.” The successful creative relationship between Nudy and Bourne paved the way for their recent album together, Sli’merre, a non-stop banger of an album with help from Lil Uzi Vert and Megan Thee Stallion.

Knife Party

10 p.m., Thursday, July 18, at 1015 Folsom. $30;

Originally a side project from their seminal drum and bass-rock band Pendulum, Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen — better known as Knife Party — have become legends among ravers since their debut in 2011. The duo immediately caught the ears of EDM-listeners around the world with their electro-dubstep hybrid sound introduced on their debut EP, 100% No Modern Talking. Knife Party would gain more popularity with their acclaimed 2012 EP Rage Valley, an aggressive and relentless electro-heavy punch that remains one of the most memorable dance albums of its time with modern classic tracks like “Bonfire” and “Centipede,” and the EP was the duo’s first entry on the Billboard Top 100. Knife Party’s first studio album, 2014’s Abandon Ship, captures the chaotic glory of what made ravers fall in love with their brand of crunchy and buzzy festival-filling bangers. The duo has remained relatively silent since their 2015 EP Trigger Warning, but have hinted to fans a new EP, Lost Souls, is on the way soon.
