For those who take their punk without prefixes (“post,” “pop,” etc.), may we suggest Oakland's High Castle? This demonic power trio's debut LP, Spirit of the West, melds raw sonics and spastic adventurousness with deliciously obnoxious shouting from vocalist/guitarist Erin Allen. Neither cheesy Ramones-worship nor formulaic hardcore, Spirit includes melodic songs lamenting the tired cycle of life as a wage slave (“Half Mass”) as well as bewildering assaults propelled by croaking mechanical riffs (“We Were Lovers”). Mix some of Wire's experimentation with the Minutemen's concise crispness, add hardcore's fuck-this attitude, and you get one punishing local punk band.
